What Is Hieros Gamos?

Hieros Gamos is the name given to the ancient sacred sexual ritual that Sophie’s grandfather, Jacques Saunière, performs with a female member of the Priory of Sion before a group of initiates and that she accidentally witnesses, with traumatic consequences. She flees his home and remains out of contact for the next ten years, spurning all his efforts to communicate with her.

The ritual can be traced back to ancient fertility cults and manifests the belief that a man is able to reach spiritual completion or ‘gnosis’ through ritualised intercourse with a priestess in which the masculine principle combines with – or ‘marries’ with - the feminine principle, producing a higher state of consciousness.

Hieros gamos is sometimes referred to as theogamy or sacred marriage, enacted to symbolise the union of the god and goddess aspects of divine being and to provide the ideal for human sexual unions. This was a quite common aspect of early fertility rites and has been re-enacted, either actually or symbolically, by many religious cults over the centuries.

The act was seen as a sacred joining of the male and female principles of the universe, often symbolised by Hermaphrodite, a composite male/female figure representing the fusing of the maleness of the Greek god Hermes with the femaleness of the goddess Aphrodite.

Since the emphasis was on transformation, it is sometimes linked to ancient alchemy with its alleged processes of turning base metals into gold, which was seen as a material way of symbolising the levels of transformation that man goes through in order to attain higher levels of consciousness. Some of the older references to alchemy link it to a yet higher esoteric level of sexual ritual.
