The Christian
Church, particularly the Vatican and the Roman Catholic Church, is often
heavily criticised for being unwilling to move with the times and to cling
obstinately to outmoded attitudes and practices.
Many feel that the
promises of Vatican II have not been fulfilled, and that the Roman Catholic
Church is the poorer for that.
There is
incontrovertible evidence that the modern Christian Church is not always
scrupulous, and the Vatican in particular is viewed by many as operating like a
powerful secret society.
The Roman Catholic
Church is, however, in something of a double bind. Even many of its most
illustrious priests and prelates are fully aware of the need for change and for
the creation of an atmosphere where free enquiry is welcomed.
But when it comes to
‘admitting the truth’, it faces the dilemma of what this really means. What is
‘the truth’? Among the avalanche of speculation, conspiracy theories, different
interpretations of the same material, it is just not possible at this stage to
be sure of what constitutes ‘the truth’ or even if there is any such thing.
History, as we know,
is written by the victors. The losers have little say. In the matter of the
early days of Christianity, it was the victorious orthodox Christian Church who
wrote the history.
Even if the Church
has the courage to investigate itself, the process will remain filled with
variables and opposing opinions and attitudes.
So, as things stand,
it is doubtful whether there is such a thing as ‘the truth’ to be admitted to.
But this does not mean that some honest thinking and self-examination on the
part of the Church are not well overdue. Its own future might be at stake.
